The ritual
How a soak unfolds
No schedule to keep. This is only the shape most sessions take, from the wash stools to the last cup of tea.
Four quiet steps.
Rinse first
Seated at the wash stools, warm water and soap before any tub. It is how the water stays clean for everyone.
Soak, then cool
Into the cedar tub at forty degrees. Sit until the heat reaches your shoulders, then cool at the plunge. Repeat as you like.
Rest
On the bench, or under a blanket in the quiet room. The heat keeps working long after you leave the water.
Stay for tea
Genmaicha in the tea room, for as long as the afternoon allows. Most people leave slower than they arrived.
Before you soak
Four small customs, borrowed from the sento. They keep the water clean and the rooms calm.
Rinse first
Wash at the shower stools before entering any tub, the sento way. The water stays clean for everyone after you.
Phones stay in lockers
Leave yours in the changing room. An hour out of reach is part of the treatment.
Voices stay low
Soft conversation belongs in the tea room. The soak rooms sit close to silence, even outside silent hours.
Arrive ten minutes early
It leaves time to rinse, change and settle in, so your soak starts calm instead of hurried.
