Common questions

Will a deck really take a snow load?
Yes. We size joists, posts and footings for the alpine snow zone under NZS 3604, so the deck that holds a summer crowd also holds a winter of wet snow.
Do we need a building consent?
Often. Decks over a metre high, most roofed structures, and pool or barrier fencing usually need consent. We tell you at the site visit and handle the paperwork either way.
Which timber should we choose?
It depends on budget, look and how much upkeep you want. We walk you through kwila, garapa, macrocarpa, cedar and composite, and quote two options where it helps.
How long does a build take?
Most decks and fences run one to three weeks on site once we start; a large deck with a roof and balustrade runs longer. You get a real date before we begin.
How much maintenance is involved?
Hardwood decks want an oil every year or two, or you let them silver. Composite and powder-coated aluminium are a wash-down and little else.
How far do you travel?
Across the Queenstown Lakes district from our Frankton workshop, Wanaka included. Further afield for the right job, just ask.
